Ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible

Last year, Google launched their Project 10^100. It aims at picking a handful of projects to pursue (invest in) that will benefit humankind. You can see the descriptions of the current projects, and vote for your favorite one here: http://www.project10tothe100.com/vote.html.

Notice that most (or all?) of these are IS or IT driven. Yes, you can indeed do good things with IS/T !!!

  1. Let me put in a vote for Enhance science and engineering education; I heard an interview during a Talk Radio show, can't remember the exact quote, but it was words to the effect of, "a civilization will not be able to sustain and grow unless there is a core group of people who dedicate time to learn science, math and engineering." One of the reasons Rome was such a great civilization was because of the water distribution network into the city of Rome; an incredible engineering feat, which allowed the city to grow and prosper.

  2. I think the Google project should be part of the class project. This project would be interesting to our class since we have such a diverse group of students. Trying to come up with projects that benefit Mankind might sound somewhat difficult but may in fact be rewarding. Then again this is just my own opinion. In the end, each group can submit their idea to Google for a chance of getting their project funded.

  3. If more companies did what Google and Microsoft are doing we would pay lower taxes, live longer lives, have less war, etc. No, I am not an idealist, but when people take care of people, as opposed to governments taking care of people, the results seem to be much more successful.

I think that more and more companies will see that building SOCIAL CAPITAL will inevitabley lead to higher profits. Here's to building social capital and I challenge each an everyone of you to encourage your company to build social capital in your community, you will not regret it!
